Dr. William S. Shaw is Associate Professor and Chief, Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, Connecticut, USA.  Dr. Shaw has 25 years of research experience in the field of occupational health and safety.  With a primary training background in engineering and clinical psychology, his research activities have focused on workplace pain, disability, and return-to-work, especially the impact of psychosocial and organizational factors on work outcomes after acute musculoskeletal injuries or the development of chronic health conditions.  He currently serves as Co-Director of the Center for Promotion of Health in the New England Workplace (CPH-NEW), one of ten NIOSH Centers of Excellence for Total Worker Health®.  He has more than 125 published scientific journal articles in the fields of occupational medicine, pain, health psychology, and occupational rehabilitation.

 

Sue Ann Sarpy, M.S., Ph.D.

Principal and Founder of Sarpy and Associates, Sue Ann Sarpy is an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist with over 20 years of experience in a variety of academic and applied settings.  Dr. Sarpy has served as principal scientist and lead evaluator on interdisciplinary teams examining effectiveness and impact of various interventions, including public health workforce and leadership development programs, occupational health and safety trainings, and disaster and emergency preparedness/response and resiliency programs, to ensure continuous quality improvement and guide related policy development.  Dr. Sarpy serves as the Behavioral Economics Advisor of the Research to Practice Initiative for CPWR: The Center for Construction Research and Training, Board Member of the Collaborative for the Social Dimensions of Disasters Non-Profit Council, Program Chair of the Leadership and Organizational Performance Committee of the American Evaluation Association, and Co-Chair of the Health Equity Committee of the Virginia Public Health AssociationHer areas of expertise include training and development, monitoring and evaluation systems, behavioral economics, social network analysis, and organizational effectiveness.

 

Dr. W. Allen Robison

Dr. Robison is the Director of the NIOSH Office of Extramural Programs which oversees a diverse research and training portfolio. Allen started with NIOSH in 2006 as a Scientific Program Official managing extramural portfolios in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; Healthcare and Social Assistance; Manufacturing; Hearing Loss Prevention; and Nanotechnology.

Prior to NIOSH, Dr. Robison was a senior toxicologist at the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) where he conducted public health assessments and consultations for Superfund sites. He expanded agency capacity in toxicology, instructed in the ATSDR Basic Public Health Assessment Course, and was a Technical Project Officer for cooperative agreements with states including Illinois, Texas, South Carolina, Arizona, and others. He provided national expertise on exposures to contaminants in fish, shellfish, and other foods, and worked on sites relevant to Native Americans and Alaskan Natives.

Allen earned a BS (Natural Resources Management, School of Agriculture) at the University of Tennessee Martin, an MS in Biology from Western Kentucky University, and a PhD in Toxicology from the University of Kentucky. He worked for the Commonwealth of Kentucky (Dept. for Environmental Protection) for 12 years in air quality, water quality, and laboratory QA/QC. He entered Federal service in 1993 as an Environmental Toxicologist in the Dept. of Interior. From 1998-2001, he was the Southeast Regional Environmental Toxicologist for the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Dr. Robison has a broad science background, diverse professional experience, and a large interest in research. His experience includes state, regional, and national level positions. He remains excited about opportunities to engage in science, interact with extramural experts, and gain insights from NIOSH scientists. He also has experience as a welder, ironworker, and farmworker.

Rashaun Roberts, Ph.D.

Rashaun Roberts is the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)’s Associate Director for Diversity and Inclusion and Director of the Institute’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office established in 2021. Prior to assuming these roles in 2019 and 2021 respectively, Dr. Roberts was a researcher and scientific leader in NIOSH’s Division of Applied Research and Technology from 2002 to 2018.   She led, supported, collaborated on, and provided oversight to research and dissemination projects covering a wide variety of content areas- including but not limited to workplace discrimination, minority health/health disparities, aging, and women’s health.

Rene Pana-Cryan, PhD

Rene is Chief Economist and Director of the Economic Research and Support Office in the Office of the Director of the National Institute for Occupational safety and Health (NIOSH). She also co-manages the NIOSH Healthy Work Design and Worker Well-being Cross-Sector Program. Her interests include understanding how to improve the design of work, management practices, and the physical and psychosocial work environment in order to enable workers to thrive and contribute productively at work, at home, and in society. She is particularly interested in understanding the economic factors that affect work arrangements and the effects of work arrangements on the well-being of workers and their families. Rene joined NIOSH in 1996 as a post-doctoral Prevention Effectiveness fellow.

 

Christopher S. Pan

Christopher is a Senior Researcher and Safety Engineer with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Division of Safety Research (DSR) in Morgantown, West Virginia. He received his B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Tunghai University in Taiwan. Chris received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering with an emphasis in Safety Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He also is a Certified Professional Ergonomist. Chris has built a strong and illustrious career at NIOSH working on a multitude of high visibility projects dealing with complex work-related topics of ergonomics, biomechanics, and safety. Throughout his career he has utilized the principles of safety engineering and human factors engineering to conduct research studying the etiology of occupational injury events. His research interests are to apply advanced engineering technologies, including sensor technologies, computer simulations, and other biomechanical assessment techniques to identify the injury mechanisms for heavy construction elevated equipment and transportation vehicles. He has produced more than 200 publications/presentations/documents/patents related to his research. In 2015, he was selected as the CDC Engineer of the Year and U.S. Public Health Service Engineer of the Year. He currently serves as a Project Officer at NIOSH/DSR for three funded studies in the construction sector.

Patrick O’Shaughnessy, PhD, CIH

Patrick joined the faculty at the University of Iowa in 1997 where he is a Professor in the department of Occupational and Environmental Health. He serves the department as the Associate Head for Student Affairs and Curriculum. Dr. O’Shaughnessy obtained licensure as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) in 2008 and is a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. He is the Director of the NIOSH-funded Education and Research Center, the Heartland Center for Occupational Safety and Health. Dr. O’Shaughnessy is a recognized scholar in the field of aerosol physics applied to occupational and environmental health concerns, and in support of inhalation toxicology research devoted to pulmonary responses resulting from aerosol exposures.

Jennifer Lincoln

Dr. Jennifer Lincoln has three decades of occupational safety and health experience focusing on the prevention of traumatic injuries among workers in high-risk industries.  She currently serves as the Associate Director for the NIOSH Office of Agriculture Safety and Health.

John Howard, MD, MPH, JD, LLM, MBA

John Howard is the Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and the Administrator of the World Trade Center Health Program in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Howard was first appointed NIOSH Director in 2002 during the George W. Bush Administration and served in that position until 2008. In 2009, Dr. Howard worked as a consultant with the US-Afghanistan Health Initiative. In September of 2009, Dr. Howard was again appointed NIOSH Director, and was reappointed for a third six-year term in 2015 and a fourth six-year term in 2021. Prior to his appointments as NIOSH Director and WTC Health Program Administrator, Dr. Howard served as Chief of the Division of Occupational Safety and Health in the State of California’s Labor and Workforce Development Agency from 1991 through 2002. Dr. Howard earned a Doctor of Medicine from Loyola University of Chicago; a Master of Public Health from the Harvard University School of Public Health; a Doctor of Law from the University of California at Los Angeles; and a Master of Law in Administrative Law and Economic Regulation, and a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare Management, both degrees from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Dr. Howard is board-certified in internal medicine and occupational medicine. He is admitted to the practice of medicine and law in the State of California and in the District of Columbia, and he is a member U.S. Supreme Court bar. He has written numerous articles on occupational health, policy and law.

 

Rebecca J. Guerin, PhD, CHES

Dr. Guerin is a research social scientist and chief of the Social Science and Translation Research Branch (SSTRB), Division of Science Integration (DSI), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. Guerin also coordinates the Safe • Skilled • Ready Workforce (SSRW) and NIOSH Translation Research programs. For more than 14 years, Dr. Guerin has been responsible for implementing and evaluating a program of research to integrate workplace safety and health skills into secondary school curricula and training for young workers. Dr. Guerin also has expertise in dissemination and implementation science and methods/approaches. Prior to joining NIOSH, Dr. Guerin held positions in the financial sector, including as an analyst with the New York Federal Reserve Bank. Dr. Guerin earned her PhD in Health Education with a focus on quantitative research methods at the University of Cincinnati (UC). She received an MA from UC in Professional and Technical Writing, an MA from Columbia University in International Affairs with a focus on International Finance and Banking and Economic Policy, and a BA from Columbia University. Dr. Guerin is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), holds a graduate certificate in Evaluation and Assessment from UC, and is earning a graduate certificate in Dissemination and Implementation Science from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
